Above is a picture of Gelfand in a fashionable hat, Russian world cup, 2009. Sofer and Slav also note (same page) that this qualified him to the candidates' matches for the world championship, but that he noted he never knew during those matches if he would actually win them. As is well known, he did, and indeed played a match for the world championship against Anand.
